City Power: Only 11% in Alexandra paying electricity

City Power has removed about 10,000 kg of illegal electricity cables in Alexandra, during its revenue collection operation.

The utility disconnected defaulting customers along Vincent Tshabalala road on Friday.

Together with the police, City Power removed Aerial Bundle Cables (ABC), bare wires and aluminum cable conductors worth around R500 000.

The City of Johannesburg is owed around R10 billion due to unpaid electricity, including Alexandra.

City Power CEO Tshifularo Mashava said they will continue with their revenue collection drive across the city.

“We are committed to providing reliable electricity to residents in the City of Johannesburg, but this cannot be achieved without the cooperation of the community in combating illegal connections.

"These connections remain a serious problem that requires a coordinated approach in curbing it, we will continue to work with law enforcement agencies to ensure that we remove as many illegal connections as we can and reduce the strain on our grid”

On Friday, the utility said only 11% of the customers in Alexandra are paying for electricity.
